She taught university-level history courses and was a staff features writer for a newspaper based in Valley City, North Dakota. Kelly wrote for the State Historical Society of North Dakota as a contracted research historian. ![]() She worked as a ranger for the National Park Service at the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site on the Montana-North Dakota border. She later earned her master’s degree in American history from the University of Louisiana-Monroe, where she focused on the Civil War and Indian Wars. Kelly earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Brigham Young University. ![]() She approached writing historical romance from her interest and background in history.
