![]() ![]() Space operas emerged in the 1930s and continue to be produced in literature, film, comics, television, and video games. The term has no relation to music, as in a traditional opera, but is instead a play on the terms "soap opera", a melodramatic television series, and "horse opera", which was coined during the 1930s to indicate a formulaic Western movie. ![]() ![]() Set mainly or entirely in outer space, it usually involves conflict between opponents possessing advanced abilities, futuristic weapons, and other sophisticated technology. Space Opera is a subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes space warfare, melodramatic adventure, interplanetary battles, chivalric romance, and risk-taking. Beginning in 1952 Budrys worked as editor and manager for such science fiction publishers as Gnome Press and Galaxy Science Fiction. His first published science fiction story was "The High Purpose", which appeared in Astounding in 1952. Finding Astounding Science Fiction magazine caused him at the age of 11 to want to become a science fiction writer. He taught himself English at the age of six by reading Robinson Crusoe. He is known for the influential 1960 novel Rogue Moon. Sentry, William Scarff, and Paul Janvier. ![]() He was also known under the pen names Frank Mason, Alger Rome (in collaboration with Jerome Bixby), John A.
